DJIA Plummets 870Pts at Close; Nasdaq Down 2%+; Nvidia, Tesla Sag 4%
21 Jan 2026 05:02
US bourse plunged on Tuesday after reopening, as US President Donald Trump beefed up threats to seize Greenland and announced new tariffs on opposing countries, including eight NATO member states, sending shockwaves to the stock market. US stocks collapsed on Tuesday, with the three major indices recording their worst single-day performance since October last year.

The VIX, known as the "fear gauge", rose to 20. The DJIA stumbled as much as 931 points or 1.9% on Tuesday, ultimately closing down 870 points or 1.8%, at 48,488. The S&P 500 lost 143 points or 2.1%, to 6,796. Techs were hit hard, with the Nasdaq falling the most, closing down 561 points or 2.4%, to 22,954.

Due to rising yields and a shift towards safe-haven assets, techs led the declines. All of the "Magnificent Seven" decreased, with NVIDIA (NVDA.US) leading the slip by 4.4%, followed by Tesla (TSLA.US) down 4.2%. Apple (AAPL.US) and Amazon (AMZN.US) both sagged over 3%.

Several companies are set to release quarterly earnings this week, including Netflix (NFLX.US), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.US), and Intel (INTC.US).
